May 10th, 2010 · Just-Eat, Personal stuff

The Just-Eat fantasy football league has come to its usual conclusion with the ‘Buttressbabes’ once again finishing top of the league.  I would like to say it has been a long hard battle to win the league but that wouldn’t be true, ;-) hopefully there will be more of a battle when hostilities commence in August.  I look forward to winning three years on the trot next year.

Vote Belly or Brain

May 6th, 2010 · Just-Eat, Personal stuff, Uncategorized

Today is a huge day for Britain politically with the General Election and naturally at Just-Eat.co.uk we are getting in on the fun.  Today we would ask you all to also vote Belly or Brain. ;-) For more information on bellyandbrain check out bellyandbrain.com

I have always been really interested in politics and will certainly be voting later today.  I won’t say which way as this is my business blog and that probably isn’t really the place, but those that know me or work with me have a pretty good idea which way I will be going!  I will say that I don’t agree with voter apathy , I do believe politicians are different from each other (if not behaviorally then policy wise!) and that is sufficient reason to inform ourselves and make a decision either way.  I think the right to vote is a responsibility not just a right and I will be exercising my right later.

If you are wondering who ‘The Times’ newspaper says has been Britains best ever Prime Ministers, then click here for the list. Good to see a Welshman in the top two and no shame to be second to the great man himself Sir Winston Churchill.

I dont know what to say other than the usual cliches, ‘it is always harder to win the title in your second year’, ‘the league never lies’ etc etc. I am looking forward to the open top bus parade through Winslow in a few days time.

PR in Egypt and Reuters! And it is the Haggis Story

May 4th, 2010 · Just-Eat, Uncategorized

Haggis? Is that the hairy chap in Harry Potter?

Our team have been in Glasgow recently spreading the word about Just-Eat, and we thought it would d be a bit of fun to see just how much people know about haggis across the UK. It turns out not a lot…

Our research team have found that 18% of Brits believe haggis to be an animal, whilst 68% of Scots said theyd like the delicacy to be available as a takeaway option.

We conducted a study of 1,623 Brits with a view to understanding their knowledge of traditional Scottish food.

The survey revealed that 68% of Scots would like to see Haggis delivered to their door as an online takeaway option, while 41% of Brits didnt know what the traditional Scottish dish was.

Many of those polled were unsure of what haggis actually was, with 15% admitting they thought it was a Scottish musical instrument. The study revealed that a fifth, 18%, of Brits think that haggis is a hill top dwelling animal – whilst 4% admitted to thinking it was a character from Harry Potter.

Of the 781 Scots that were polled, 68% said they would like to order haggis online from a local takeaway and have it delivered to their door whilst 14% of Scots werent sure what haggis was.

Ben Jones Blog Post 5 – Just-Eat salesman in Canada

May 2nd, 2010 · Just-Eat

You wait all day then two come along at once…. ?
Its 21:23 here in Canada and 17C, things are good. Slowly re-building my pipeline and plodding along nicely. (And as Henry says, our plodding is an athletes sprinting)
I was thinking that in previous blogs I have not mentioned the ‘competition’. And the similarities to that of  it back home in the UK.
So just quickly I will educate you.
The two main competitors are
Grub Canada AKA: Grubby
Orderit.ca
Grub Canada have been about in Canada for 4 years. They are in 5 or 6 cities, predomitly university areas. Now this is where it gets funny, a year ago they were on Dragon’s Den Canada, they got financing (50% of the company for $200,000). After the show, talks broke down and the dragon did not invest. Sounding familiar? …. They strictly seem to target Just-Eat restaurants only and in my experience do less business than we give restaurants.
Anyways, it makes me laugh when I think about just how similar Hungry house and Grubby are.
Its now 21:44 and still 17C

Ben Jones Blog Post 4 – Just-Eat salesman in Canada

May 2nd, 2010 · Just-Eat, Uncategorized

So it’s been a while since my last update/ Blog….
We done our bitz up in Ottawa it went well, lessons were learnt on how to do it better next time. But we have almost 50 restaurants there now, and are getting few orders as well
Processes are now finally being put into place in Canada, reporting procedures, sales expectations, a commission structure, best practices, management structure. All of these are adjustments which were needed for Canada with some urgency.
Finally the customer care team are now aloud to change hours and delivery charges instead of them being put off line and waiting for a sales rep to change them.
Mostly the changes are positive, needed and make sure everyone is more productive, but there have been some negative ones also, the main change was probably the hardest one to swallow. A fellow team member being let go. She started for the company the day after I arrived in Canada. To be sacked at a time like that, as the person doing it must be one of the worst things for anyone to have to do, I no I would not heave wanted to be the person doing it.  But we all face difficult challenges everyday and as a manger I guess that is one of the hardest.
More positively though, it just goes to show how good a company Just-Eat normally is and what high standards we all have and expect from the company. If a sales guy is struggling in the UK office (and I speak from experience) Others rally round, give advise, let you shadow them, keep you motivated and that is such a great team spirit to have! (Thanks Jason Whale)
So myself, I’ve had one of my poorest months to date. I have not yet worked out why but I have the opportunity to swing it around in the next week and a half. I’m on 6 sales for the month!
Week one- 8 -2 cancellations
Week two- 0 (I was taken out of the field to concentrate solely on issues, something Corey had been doing to date)
Week 3- 0 sales and no excuses. Just me not being on form
If I had to really pinpoint the dry up in sales for me I would have to say it was the loss of my pipeline. 3 weeks away meant I was basically restarting. Granted I should have done 5 of the bat last week and I didn’t and for this there is no excuse and I only have my self to blame. But it’s a number I know I will turn around next week. It’s like a footballer who’s been out a while, although desperate to score, to much pressure on yourself results in chances being put high and wide. One thing I was told some months back and still remember to date is ‘remember what you enjoy about the company, don’t go out solely to sell, go out to have a laugh and a joke with restaurant owners, and the sales will follow’ That is something I intend to go and do next week. You’re only as good as your last sales week. So at the moment I’m the poorest sales guy in JE. Something needs to be done about that!  I look forward to being one of the top performers again next week.

Up and Running in May

May 1st, 2010 · Just-Eat, Personal stuff, Uncategorized

This weekend has been great already. Takeaway order wise it has been totally without precedent and speaking to some of our restaurant partners it is great to hear they are having a good time too. We also had a super April as a business so onwards and upwards.

Outside the world of Just-Eat it has also been a really good weekend, today I took my dogs for a walk in the woods. Check out the IMG00031-20100501-1240

pictures of my two hounds having a good time. They are both rescue dogs from the RSPCA, I have to say I don’t really understand why people go and buy other dogs unless there is a specific reason.  The rescue homes are full of great dogs and in my view that is the place to go if you want a dog.

IMG00027-20100501-1238

I guess everybody needs a release and this is mine, it is what I like to do to relax and having always had a dog since I was around 5 years old it is the only thing I do these days without my blackberry within touching distance! ;-)

The start of May also means that the cricket season has started so I am happy to be back playing with the guys for another summer. I really enjoy playing most sports and cricket gives me the Saturday sporting fix that I need to keep me going until the Rugby season starts in September.  Cricket drives Gemma nuts as it takes 7 hours to play a game and on top of that sometimes after all that time the match is drawn.  To people who don’t play cricket it is a game that can appear a tad odd!

A new pizza topping to try, locusts!

April 23rd, 2010 · Just-Eat, Personal stuff

If you fancy something different on your pizza then ask your restaurant if they can help you out with this new pizza ingredient.  It makes a change from pepperoni.

Haggis is a animal that lives on a hill

April 23rd, 2010 · Just-Eat, Personal stuff, Sales

The latest press coverage of Just-Eat.co.uk. A nice funny story covered by the Daily Mail, The Sun, Metro, Daily Star, Daily Record and Scotsman. ;-)   The full story is here.

As a Welsh person exiled in England it made me laugh to think that in the UK the best pick up from newspapers PR wise for us as a business are always the regional and local stories comparing the Welsh to the English etc etc. Even after all this time and hundreds of years of water under the bridge it seems as Brits we never tire of a bit of competing with each other as home nations!  Anyway enjoy it is a funny story.
